About the Alexander Technique

What is the Alexander Technique?
The answer to this question is hotly debated in the Alexander world. Perhaps it is because the Alexander Technique is many things or perhaps because it is difficult to directly compare it to other practices. Therefore to answer this question it has been broken down in to different areas below.

Alexander Technique for Health

The Technique is an excellent way of preventing health problems as it works on increasing the general effectiveness of the mind and body. When applied, the body then has a better chance to heal itself.
Depending on the individual, The Alexander Technique can often have an impact on the following conditions:
  • Excess tension and stiffness
  • Headaches
  • Back problems
  • Repetitive Strain Injury
  • Arthritis and joint conditions
  • Fatigue
  • Breathing problems.

Many people find that they have far too much physical tension in the body and this can have an impact on the general functioning of the body. Once this tension has been reduced, people often find that health problems improve or disappear.

Please note that it is recommended that people see a medical practitioner as a first point of call and use the Alexander technique as a way of enhancing their recovery process rather than dictating it.

Office Workers

Many people sit awkwardly at their desk for many hours resulting in back or neck problems and sometimes Repetitive Strain Injuries. The Technique can help to reduce unecessary tension resulting from bad posture and stiffness. This can often help prevent problems recurring in the future.

Alexander Technique for Performance

Musicians and Singers

Most music colleges in the UK have Alexander Technique departments as it is found to be an effective way of improving instrumental playing and singing. It can reduce excess physical tension making movements faster and more fluid, it can also improve tone, projection and enhance musicality. It has also been found to help with stage fright. Please see About Jo for more information on my musical background.

Actors

F.M. Alexander, founder of the Alexander Technique, was himself a Shakespearean reciter. He found that he was able to overcome his vocal troubles that plagued him in his early years by developing and applying the Technique he developed in the 1890s. Many actors use the Technique to help them with their voice (including projection and expression), to move more freely on stage, and to help with stage fright and expression.

Sports People

The Alexander Technique can help with a wide range of sports activites. A series of lessons can help to maximise effectiveness of movements, reduce unecessary tension and free joints.

Other Performers

Circus performers, presenters and other performance related individuals will also be able to benefit from the Technique. This can include improving effectiveness of movements, helping with voice projection and also with dexterity and coordination.

Self Development

As the Technique works on the mind as well as the body it is particularly useful as a tool for self improvement and change. It can help with anger management, improving self control, breaking down unwanted habits and improving self confidence.
